Via de Genealogy Blog kwam ik bij een artikel van de Schotse krant The Daily Record (van 16 april 2007):
TOURISTS are flocking to Scotland in a bid to trace their ancestors. Around five per cent of visitors to the UK from North America, Australia and New Zealand were on ancestry tours last year. And this figure is expected to double in the next 12 months, according to research from tourist body VisitBritain. The top destination for “roots tourists” is London, followed by Edinburg h, Manchester, Birmingham and Glasgow. VisitBritain chief executive Tom Wright said: “More than 90million people worldwide claim British ancestry and the rising interest in tracing their past means that many may be inspired to visit here in person. “Ancestral tourism also gives Britons the chance to be tourism ambassadors for newly discovered friends and relations.”
Wow, 5% van de toeristen op stamboomtocht?! Ik moet zeggen dat het me tijdens mijn vakantie dit jaar naar Engeland ook opviel: bij elk VVV zag je wel folders liggen van archieven! Is dit ook het geval bij de Nederlandse VVV? Ik hoop in ieder geval dat de Nederlandse archieven de groep toeristen ook als een doelgroep herkennen en bedienen!
